Plas Newydd, the stately home of the Marquis of Anglesey, lies
on the banks of the Menai Strait near Lanfair PG, on the Isle
of Anglesey in north Wales.
Designed in
the 18th century by James Wyatt, the architecture is a mixture
of elegant classical and gothic design, with octagonal turrets
adorning the outside and Doric columns augmenting the grandeur
of the neoclassical staircase. In the dining room is a huge 58ft
long mural painted by Rex Whistler, who spent some time at Plas
Newydd in the 1930's. 
The
mural depicts the scenery around the house, with the sea in the
foreground sweeping towards the mountainous region of Snowdonia,
and the spires of Portmeirion outlined against the clouds. There
is also an exhibition about the artist's work.
The first
Marquis of Anglsesey commanded the cavalry in the battle of Waterloo,
and relics are on display in the house's Military Museum, including
an early artificial limb. Surrounding the house are lovely gardens
which have wonderful views of Snowdonia. There is a rhododendron
garden, Italianate terrace, Australasian arboretum, woodland walks,
and a marine walk that leads along the shores of the Menai Straits.
