Perched on a hill outside the town centre of Llangollen in the
north Wales borderlands is Plas Newydd, the 18th home of the notorious
Ladies of Llangollen.
The Ladies
of Llangollen, Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, eloped
together in 1776, and spent much time entertaining, becoming celebrated
and much talked about hosts. Cultural luminaries Sir Walter Scott
and William Wordsworth were among their many guests, and the Duke
of Wellington was also a frequent visitor, 
according
to diary records. Set within landscaped gardens, the black and
white timbered Tudor-styled building of Plas Newydd was the ladies'
residence for almost 50 years.
Known for
their eccentricity, the ladies transformed the house, adding gothic
features such as stained glass and sculpted wood panelling. Although
much of the original furniture was sold after the house came under
new ownership, many of the ladies' possessions are on display
inside the rooms, including letters, diaries and newspaper articles.
There are wonderful views of the surrounding countryside from
the tranquil landscaped parkland that surrounds the house.
