In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers (Separatists from the Church of England)
sailed from Plymouth in the Mayflower to settle in New Plymouth
and lay the foundations of the New England States, USA.
The Barbican
Village, Plymouth is where Drake (who helped defeat the Spanish
Armada in 1588) and Raleigh initially set anchor and its craft
workshops and galleries help ensure that the area retains its
traditional feel. The area expanded and became an important hub
in the 15th century as a result of the
building
of larger sea fairing vessels. Later, in 1768 James Cook set sail
from Plymouth in search of a southern continent.
Plymouth Hoe
is probably best known for Sir Francis Drake refusing to abandon
his game of bowls when England was just about to be invaded by
the Spanish Armada. A pleasant area of green, the Hoe is home
to Smeaton’s Tower which was originally the Eddystone Lighthouse.
Although it looks like a lighthouse, this distinctive red and
white tower simply provides its story to tourists having previously
been located 14 miles away on the Eddystone rocks.
