Wales location map
Portmeirion,
North Wales, UK

Portmeirion Photo Portmeirion is located on a small, rugged private peninsula to the east of Porthmadog in Southern Snowdonia. Built between 1925 and 1975, the place is the bizarrely unique creation of Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who envisioned a utopian village that enhanced rather than spoiled the environment.

Due to Clough Williams-Ellis's concern with conservation, many buildings threatened with demolition were reconstructed in Portmeirion.Portmeirion PhotoTo say that the village is an unusual juxtaposition of architectural styles is an understatement. The pastel coloured Italianate buildings, Corinthian columns, Mediterranean piazzas, palm trees and fountains create a surreal atmosphere that led director Patrick McGoohan to choose Portmeirion as the location of 60's cult series 'The Prisoner'.

Surrounded by tranquil beaches, subtropical gardens and woodland, Portmeirion is an unforgettable holiday destination. Although the place is owned by a charity, the village's cottages are rented out by the main hotel. West of the village, lying on the Glaslyn Estuary, the town of Porthmadog is a gateway to the stunning Lleyn Peninsula, and is the starting point of the Ffestiniog Railway. The railway ascends through wooded hillsides and meadows, past waterfalls and lakes, up to the mountains of Snowdonia, offering one of the most scenic train rides in Wales.
