The seaside resort of Portstewart lies on the northern coast of
County Derry, just west of Portrush in nearby County Antrim.
Portstewart
has been a popular holiday resort since Victorian times, and has
a grander and more old-fashioned feel to it than Portrush. The
resort is renowned for its long sandy beach, Portstewart Strand,
which is protected by the National Trust. The strand lies to the
west of the town and is one of the best locations for surfing
in the whole of the country, and driving on the sand is also allowed.
A cliffside walk runs between the beach and the town, and has
superb sea views, passing a gothic mansion on the edge of a cliff
and battlements.
A crescent-shaped
seafront promenade runs along the northwest of the town, and in
a natural rocky inlet at the east of the promenade is a small
sheltered harbour that has recently been refurbished. The town
also has facilities for golf, with nearby Portrush boasting one
of the best golf courses in Northern Ireland. An annual Red Sails
festival takes place in July, with lots of different events, and
every May the town's roads are closed off for the North West 200
motorcycle race, which also passes through Portrush and Coleraine.
