Spectacular Powis Castle and its world-famous gardens lie one mile south of Welshpool, in northern Powys, mid-Wales.

The large medieval red-sandstone castle sits on a ridge surrounded by gardens and has been lived in almost continuously for 700 years. It was initially built around 1200 as a Welsh fortress, and has been extensively remodelled over the years, containing architecture dating from many different periods. In 1587 the castle was bought by Sir Edward Herbert who transformed it into a palatial Elizabethan home, filling it with fine collections of paintings and furniture. A daughter of the Herbert family married the son of Lord Clive in 1784, hence the collection of objects associated with 'Clive of India'.

Much refurbishment has been carried out over the years, and Powis is now owned by the National Trust. The Clive Museum houses Indian treasures with lots of paintings, tapestries, jewels and armour, as well as letters and diaries, while the opulent period rooms are lavishly decorated. With wonderful views over the Severn Valley, the castle is renowned for its beautiful landscaped gardens containing large Italianate terraces and clipped yew trees, as well as many rare plants.
