Wales location map
Southern Powys,
Mid-Wales, UK

Elan Valley Photo The countryside of southern Powys in mid-Wales is some of the most beautifully remote in the country, with vast stretches of hills, lakes and valleys fringed by small towns and villages.

The old spa towns of Llandrindod Wells and Llanwrtyd Wells have many unique attractions and are both surrounded by wonderful scenery. On the Wales/England border, Knighton is the only town lying directly on the famous Offa's Dyke (which stretches almost the entire length of Wales),Red Kite Photo and boasts some of the best preserved sections of the ancient boundary. The region is also home of the striking red kite, a bird of prey that became an endangered species in the 19th century but which now flourishes again in protected nesting sites.

In the west of Powys is the wild and remote Elan River Valley, a National Nature Reserve with a nine-mile long string of interlocking reservoirs built at the end of the 19th century to supply water to Birmingham. The site covers 70 sq miles of meadows, woodland and bogs and is near the scenic Teifi pools which are the source of the River Teifi. Also nearby is the UK's leading Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm just outside the town of Rhayader, where you can watch the majestic birds gathering every day to feed.
