The Vale of Rheidol Railway runs between Abersytwyth and Devil's
Bridge, on the west coast of mid-Wales.
Opened in
1902, the narrow-gauge steam railway was built for access to the
lead mines of the Rheidol Valley, and was the last steam railway
to be owned by British Rail. The route is 13¾ miles long
with steep gradients, and the journey takes about an hour. The
wooded Rheidol Valley is spectacularly scenic, with the train
winding past rugged rock faces that swoop down to the precipitous
gorge below.
The
railway has been renovated in the last decade, and the restored
engines and carriages of today date from the 1920's and 30's.
The inland
terminus at Devil's Bridge is located by the dramatic 300ft Mynach
Falls, upstream from where the River Mynach meets the River Rheidol.
There are three bridges stacked above each other over the chasm,
with the lowest bridge dating from the 11th century, when it is
reputed to have been built by the monks of nearby Strata Florida
Abbey. The middle stone bridge dates from the 18th century, while
the highest bridge is the most modern, dating from 1901.
