Rhondda Heritage Park Photo The colliery museum of the Rhondda Heritage Park is based at the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery, Trehafod, in the Rhondda Valley of south Wales.

The Rhondda formed the heart of south Wales' coal industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, with its population soaring from around 3000 in 1860 to almost 160,000 in 1910. The Lewis Merthyr pit closed in 1983, and the visitor centre opened to the public in 1989. Today the Rhondda Heritage Park offers a unique insight into the miningRhondda Heritage Park Photo communities that shaped the area. Visitors can experience life in a colliery in the 1950's by taking an underground tour through the roadways of the mines. A cage descends to the bottom of the pit from where an ex-miner guides visitors, and the journey ends with a simulated ride to the surface.

In the restored pithead buildings is an exhibition entitled 'Black Gold - the Story of Coal', telling the story of colliery workers; and visitors can also visit the Fan House, where there is information about the social and cultural heritage of the valleys. There is an indoor reconstruction of a period village street, and an excellent art gallery with both local and national work on display. The site also has a restaurant, gift shop and children's play area.
