Rhuddlan Castle

Rhuddlan Castle Photo Rhuddlan Castle lies two miles north of the tiny cathedral city of St Asaph in the north Wales borderlands, just south of the coastal resort of Rhyl.

The castle was commissioned by Edward I in 1277 as part of his 'Iron Ring', and built on the site of an earlier Norman motte and bailey. Edward employed his famous military architect Master James of St George to design a concentric plan, with the diamond-shaped inner ward protected by an outer ward and impressive twin-towered gatehouses. Rhuddlan Castle Photo In an amazing feat of engineering, Edward set about canalizing the River Clywd so that sea access could be gained, and Gillot's Tower stands over the remains of the water gate and dock.

The castle is most famous for being the place where Edward I signed the Statue of Rhuddlan in 1284, which ensured English control of Wales - a settlement that lasted until the Act of Union in the 16th century. Although the castle survived against a Welsh uprising in 1294 and another led by Owain Glyndwr in 1400, it fell during the Civil War in 1646, and suffered much damage in the subsequent years. Most of the outer polygonal walls have gone; but despite the ravages of war and time, the sandstone ruins of the round towers and twin-towered gatehouses are a magnificent sight.
