The 'Ring of Gullion', in the south of County Armagh, is an area
known as a 'ring dyke' that encompasses the circle of low hills
which lie in the shadow of the Slieve Gullion mountain.
An Oustanding
Area of Natural beauty, the Ring of Gullion is striking for its
unique geology. Inhabited for over 6000 years, it has a rich history,
and is linked to many romantic legends, including those of the
mythic warrior Cuchulainn and the giant Fionn MacCumhaill (otherwise
known as Finn MacCool). Ancient
remains are plentiful in the region, with megalithic tombs, dolmens,
cairns, and relics from early Christian times bearing testimony
to a colourful past. On the western edge of the ring is the Dorsey
Enclosure, an Iron Age earthwork constructed along an ancient
route to Emain Macha, or Navan Fort.
The beautiful
heather-clad mountain of Slieve Gullion is the highest in Armagh
at 1894ft. On the lower forested slopes of the mountain is the
Slieve Gullion Forest Park, from where there is a scenic drive
through the breathtaking landscape. You can follow a mountain
top trail past megalithic cairns and a lake to the mountian's
summit, where the views over the ring dyke and surrounding countryside
are spectacular.
