A mere 200 miles long, the famed River Thames is the reason why
London was built where it was. The Thames meanders through the
city during its journey from the Cotswolds to Southend-on-Sea.
The River
Thames is probably the best vantage point to view the city of
London from. Iconic tourist attractions such as Big Ben, the Houses
of Parliament, London Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster
Bridge can all be viewed from the river. Cruises and pleasure
trips are available from the city
of
Westminster and many head for Hampton Court – England’s
monarchical heritage incorporating Henry VIII’s Tudor Palace.
The industrial
revolution saw the greater use of the River Thames for trade.
The English canal system evolved quickly at this time and connected
the financial hub of England’s south with the cheaper working
force in the North. Greater use of the river however led to a
requirement for improved sanitisation. This was slow to be implemented,
and for several years the river was a human health and environmental
hazard. More recently, increased awareness and legislation have
encouraged leisure pursuits to return.
