Roman Legionary Museum

Roman Legionary Museum Photo The Roman Legionary Museum lies inside the remains of the Roman fortress of Isca at Caerleon, three miles north of Newport in south Wales.

The fortress was founded at Caerleon in 75AD, and was one of only three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain. The Legionary Museum houses a huge array of artefacts that have been excavated from the site in the years since the 1920's, creating a fascinating picture of Roman life.Roman Legionary Museum Photo The museum gives an insight into everything from Roman conquests and battle techniques to the living arrangements and religious beliefs of the Roman people.

On display you will find stones, weapons, pottery, sculptured altars and coins. One of the most remarkable exhibits is the collection of almost 100 engraved Roman gemstones that were recovered from the drain of the baths. The museum also has demonstration rooms and organises a variety of events throughout the year. Children can dress up in Roman costume and replica armour and explore a full-size barrack room to experience what life was like as a Roman soldier. They can find out how Roman food was prepared, or learn about the Roman town of Isca. The remains of the fortress itself include a wonderfully preserved amphitheatre, and atmospheric barracks and baths.
