Renowned as one of the most scenic and historic countries in the world, Scotland is a fascinating place of beauty and tradition.

Scotland's craggy mountains, dark lochs, misty moorland, ancient castles and wild forests and glens co-exist with a wealth of culture that extends from the temperate southern Borders to the isolated northern islands of Orkney and Shetland. The main cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are exciting places to visit. Historical Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, is transformed into a bustling circus of worldwide culture during its internationally famous annual arts festival.

Both the Highlands in the north and the Trossachs in central Scotland have an abundance of mountain peaks, forested hillsides, caves, glens, waterfalls and lochs. Loch Ness and Loch Lomond are the most famous Scottish lochs, but there are many more besides. Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, is situated in the stunning Cairngorms, while the jagged Cuillin mountains rising above the clouds on the island of Skye are also spectacular, while Scotland's coastal towns and cities all have a unique character. The windy, granite city of Aberdeen, located near the many whisky distilleries of Speyside, is large and industrial. Further south is the pretty university town of St Andrews, world famous for its golf courses and home to Scotland's oldest university.

I was surprised to see that Scotland only has 2 regions. I can thoroughly recommend the Northern Highlands as a superb location for trekking.
