Segontium Roman Fort
Caernarfon, Gwynedd, LL55 2LN, Wales, UK.

Segontium Roman Fort Photo Segontium Roman Fort is one of Wales' most important Roman sites, and lies just east of Caernarfon, by the Menai Strait in north Wales.

An auxiliary fort, the five-acre site was occupied by the Romans for three centuries from around 77AD. Despite being a remote outpost of the Roman Army, Segontium was strategically located, lying close to the coast and the Isle of Anglesey, and it became one of the largest Roman forts in north Wales Segontium Roman Fort Photo - holding a regiment of up to 1000 soldiers. Only the foundations of the fort remain, although there is a museum which has relics that have been excavated from the site on display. The plan today contains second, third and fourth century structures, and most of the remains date from this later period of rebuilding.

Sadly, the fort was plundered in the 13th century to provide stone for Edward I's mighty castle at nearby Caernarfon. Extensive excavations have taken place over the last 160 years and the Segontium Roman Museum, which opened in 1924, has exhibits and information about the Roman conquest and occupation of Wales.
