Snowdonia Photo The beauty of Snowdonia's vast mountains is unsurpassed in Wales, with the jagged, soaring peaks dominating the horizon for miles around. Snowdonia National Park, which covers 840 sq miles and is fringed by the Cadair Idris mountain range in the south and the Lleyn Peninsula to the west, is also renowned for having the highest amount of rainfall in Wales.

Despite the rain, the glacial valleys and incredible peaks offer limitless walking and hiking opportunities. For the less fit there are many scenic short routes,Snowdon Railway Photo while the park's steam railways provide a more leisurely option to walking. The towns of Betws-y-coed and Beddgelert are surrounded by magnificent gorges and waterfalls, and make good bases for exploring the area.

At 3560ft, Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. The peaks of Tryfan and the Glyders near the Ogwen Valley to the northeast are less visited, but have spectacular views of Snowdon from their summits. To the east of the mountains, Capel Curig is a small village which offers lots of exhilarating outdoor activities at its mountaineering centre, while Llanberis, a former slate mining town, is the main base for routes up to Snowdon. If you don't fancy the walk, the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which was built at the end of the 19th century and is Britain's only rack-and-pinion railway, runs five miles to the summit.
