The Snowdon Mountain Railway has been operating since 1896, running
from Llanberis to the summit of Mt Snowdon in north Wales.
The railway
is Britain's only public rack-and-pinion railway, and the 5-mile
trip up the mountainside of Wales' highest peak takes around one
hour. The railway ascends over 3000ft on Snowdon's northwestern
slope to its terminus just below the mountain's actual summit.
The views are outstanding (weather permitting), 
with
the railway line passing through woodland and over a viaduct before
starting the mountainside climb. Most of the locomotives are the
original models dating from the 19th century.
There is a
path running parallel to the railway line for walkers who seek
a greater challenge, or who simply want more time to take in the
most spectacular and majestic mountain scenery in north Wales.
At the summit is a café and bar. A souvenir shop sells
Snowdon Mountain Railway postal labels for letters which have
the privilege of being posted in the UK's highest postbox. The
railway does not operate in winter, and in bad weather the trains
cannot run all the way to the summit.
