Southern Scotland location map
Southern Scotland,
UK

Southern Scotland can be split into three separate regions: the Scottish Borders in the east, Ayrshire in the west, and Dumfries and Galloway in the southwest.

The green valleys of the River Tweed in the east become more craggy and mountainous as you head west across the Southern Uplands. The Galloway Forest Park in the southwest is a huge expanse of dramatic wilderness, with fantastic hiking and cycling routes, while to the south is the lovely Solway coast that stretches from Dumfries to the Mull of Galloway. Some of the area's main attractions include the remarkable medieval ruins of the Border abbeys and the 18th century neoclassical Culzean Castle.

Both Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott lived in southern Scotland and were inspired by the natural beauty and turbulent history of the place. Folklore and ballads fascinated Scott, who composed his first major work, Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders, after a childhood spent immersed in the romantic legends of the Borders' past. The mansion of Abbotsford was built and lived in by Scott, and although the project landed him in financial disaster, the house provides an intriguing insight to the life and passions of the prolific Scottish writer. Robert Burns was born in the town of Alloway in Ayrshire, and today the region has many sites and museums related to Scotland's most famous poet.
