Pembrokeshire Coast Photo South Wales is a region of outstanding natural beauty, with some of country's most spectacular coastline in the south, the green hills and gardens of Carmarthenshire in the north, and the wooded valleys of the Wye and Usk further east.

South Wales is also home to Wales' capital city, Cardiff, and nearby Swansea, both of which are packed with a huge range of cultural attractions. On Carmarthen Bay you will find pretty seaside resorts like Tenby, while further east is the seaside villageSt David's Cathedral Photo of Laugharne, the birthplace of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. To the west is the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Situated there, on the northwestern tip of the beautiful St Bride's Bay, is St David's peninsula, a craggy headland where the magical cathedral of Wales' patron saint, St David, was founded.

The lovely ruins of Tintern Abbey lie in the Wye Valley to the east, while the dramatically sited ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle perch high up on a crag in Carmarthenshire. There are lots of ruined castles near the English border in the Wye Valley area, and a large Roman settlement at Caerleon in the Vale of Usk. South Wales is also famous for the mining history of its Valleys, a region of towns packed between the ridges of the landscape north of Cardiff, which provide a fascinating insight into the industrial heritage that shaped the area.
