Southwest
England

The southwest of England is one of the most scenic places in the UK. Miles of magnificent beaches, cliff-top walks, pretty villages and countryside hem the coastline stretching all the way to Land's End.

The southwest is a paradise for walkers, with Britain's longest national trail, the 613-mile South West Coast Path, traversing the coasts of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. For shorter hikes, the cliffs of Land's End and Lizard Point have fantastic coastal views. There are also many cycle routes: the West Country Way or the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route are particularly scenic. It is also filled with many historical remains. The ancient stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury are some of the UK's most enigmatic monuments, while Dartmoor and the sun-kissed Isles of Scilly also have many pre-historic sites.

The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, which by the late Middles Ages was the richest Benedictine monastery in England, are reputed to be the burial ground of King Arthur, although after the Dissolution not much remains of the original abbey. The magnificent 13th century Salisbury cathedral is one of England's most spectacular buildings, with beautiful cloisters and the highest spire in Britain. Wells Cathedral, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is also a stunning sight, famous for the hundreds of statues and carvings on its west front and the 14th century mechanical clock inside.
