County Tyrone

The Sperrin Mountains are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that lie in the northeast of County Tyrone, straddling the border with County Derry.

The landscape of the Sperrins is wild and remote, with wooded valleys on the lower slopes, and bogs and heather-covered moorland on higher levels. The gentle contours of the rounded mountains rise up to 2240ft at Mount Sawel, the highest point. There are walking trails running through the area, including the Ulster Way, as well as trails for horseback

riding and mountain biking. The beautiful empty wilderness is home to a variety of wildlife, and lots of birds. There are also opportunities for fishing, with the Glenelly and Owenkillew river valleys weaving through the countryside.

The Sperrins also have a huge concentration of archaeological remains, with standing stones and chambered graves scattered throughout the landscape. The Beaghmore Stone Circles are some of the most well-known, and lie on the southeastern slopes of the mountains. For more information, the Sperrin Heritage Centre at Gortin has displays about the historical background, culture and ecology of the area, and visitors can also try panning for gold. The An Creagan Visitor Centre in Creggan has interpretive exhibitions, and offers bike rental and information on walking and cycling routes.
