Springhill Photo Springhill is a fortified plantation manor house that is located just south of the town of Moneymore in southern County Derry.

The grand house was built at the end of the 17th century by the Conyngham family, with the wings added to the central block in the early 18th century. Inside are fascinating collections of original period oak furniture and paintings. There is also a library, and the gun room contains a collection of weapons belonging to the house's original owner, Will Conyngham, who was a soldier, and played a part in

the defence of Derry in 1689.
Most impressive of all is the huge collection of costumes, which date from the 18th century to the 1930's.

The house is now owned by the National Trust who operate guided tours, recounting generations of family stories. One of the upstairs rooms is said to be haunted by one of Ireland's most famous resident ghosts, that of Olivia Lenox-Conyngham, whose husband shot himself at the house in 1816. Surrounding Springhill House are beautiful gardens and parkland, with scenic woodland walks. The site also has a play centre for children.
