St David's,
South Wales, UK

St David's Photo The tiny cathedral city of St David's is the smallest city in the UK. It lies in a stunning location on the rugged St David's peninsula in Pembrokeshire, south Wales.

The cathedral of St David's was founded as a memorial to the patron saint of Wales, and the city was a famous holy pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages that almost rivalled Rome in terms of significance, according to the Pope in the 12th century. The cathedral's purple and gold stone has been restored over the centuries,Whitesands Bay Photo while nearby the ruined 14th century Bishop's Palace is a grand sight. You can visit the birthplace of St David at St Non's Bay, just south of the cathedral, where the ruins of the 13th century St Non's chapel are situated.

The headland is great for walking and beneath St David's lie some of the oldest rocks in Britain, dating back to about 600 million years. You can also catch a boat to Ramsey Island, an RSPB reserve, which has the second largest grey seal colony in Britain, or go whale or dolphin watching. Just northwest of St David's is the appropriately named Whitesands Bay (Porth Mawr), which is popular with surfers.
