St David's Cathedral Photo The magnificent St David's Cathedral is named after the patron saint of Wales and rests on the rocky headland of St David's in Pembrokeshire, south Wales.

Lying in a wooded valley surrounded by a garden and graveyard, built in purple hued sandstone and embellished with gold, the cathedral is renowned for its beauty. It was built in the 12th century on the site of a monastery founded by St David in the 6th century, and was a hugely popular pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages, St David's Cathedral Photo with the Pope declaring that two journeys to St David's was the equivalent of one journey to Rome.

The wonderful carved oak ceiling of the nave is one of the cathedral's most attractive features, while beneath the Romanesque arches are many tombs and effigies of the past bishops of St David's. The dramatically sloping floor was the consequence of an earthquake that occurred in the 13th century. Near the cathedral stand the ruins of the ornately decorated Bishop's Palace, built by Bishop Gower in the 14th century. Gower was also responsible for modifying the cathedral itself, while later, in the 19th century, an extensive program of restoration was undertaken by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
