Strangford Lough,
County Down

Strangford Lough Photo Strangford Lough is a sea lough lying on the east coast of Northern Ireland in County Down.

Forming the largest inlet in the UK, the lough is almost land-locked, separated from the Irish Sea by the Ards Peninsula to the east. As well as being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the lough is a conservation area, with a huge variety of marine animals and a rich bird life. It is fringed by beautiful coves, inlets and drumlins, attractive towns and villages, and dotted with masses of islands.Portaferry Photo Fishing, yachting, diving and cruising are all popular activities.

Most of the islands lie along the west shore. You can take a cruise from Sketrick Island; and nearby Mahee Island is home to the Nendrum monastic site. Further south is the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland at Killyleagh. On the east shore is the Ards Peninsula, where Grey Abbey and Mount Stewart Gardens are located. Further south, with a beautiful waterfront and splendid sunsets, the atmospheric small town of Portaferry lies on the east side of the entrance to Strangford Lough. Ferries run across the Narrows to the pretty village of Strangford on the opposite shore, which is near the estate of Castle Ward.
