Strata Florida Abbey Photo The ruins of Strata Florida Abbey are situated in picturesque rural surroundings on the green banks of the River Teifi, 14 miles from Aberystwyth in mid-Wales.

The 12th century Cistercian abbey was founded by Welsh Prince Rhys ap Gruffydd, and the name Strata Florida means 'Valley of the Flowers'. An income was provided through pasture lands granted to the abbey, and Strata Florida became a centre for Welsh scholarship. In the 13th century the building was damaged when it was struck by lightening andLlanthony Priory Photo attacked during the struggles between the Welsh and English, and the site was later abandoned, falling into ruin.

The ruins are scarce, although the serene, isolated setting provides a wonderful backdrop to the remaining fragments, which evoke a sense of how the abbey would once have been. The ornate stonework of the huge west doorway is remarkably well preserved and there is a fine collection of original decorated medieval floor tiles in the covered chapels of the south transept. The abbey was the burial ground of many Welsh princes, and a memorial slab commemorates the great medieval Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, who is also reputed to be buried on the site.
