Wales location map
Swansea,
South Wales, UK

Swansea Marina Photo Situated at the edge of the beautiful Gower peninsula by the mouth of the River Tawe on the South Wales coast is Swansea, Wales' second largest city.

Swansea was extensively rebuilt after the bombings of World War II, and was once a centre for heavy industry. It has a more urban and less anglicised feel to it than Cardiff, Wales' capital. Superbly located, with a large seafront overlooking Swansea Bay, the city makes a good base for exploring the nearby Mumbles and Gower coastline.Swansea Castle Photo There are lots of great spots for eating and drinking, and Swansea is also home to a number of interesting museums, most notably the stunning, newly opened, landmark National Waterfront Museum located in the regenerated docks area.

Other museums include the charmingly quaint Swansea Museum, housed in a Victorian building, and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, with an impressive selection of Welsh art, glass and ceramics. Swansea was the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, and boasts the National Literature Centre for Wales and the Dylan Thomas Centre, which has displays and a huge collection of Thomas's books and manuscripts. The incongruous remains of Swansea's 13th century castle stand in the main shopping area; and the city also has many parks, and a huge market where you can buy local delicacies. You can walk or cycle along the seafront promenade to The Mumbles, a former fishing village popular with day-trippers.
