Wales location map
Tenby,
South Wales, UK

Tenby Photo On the south coast of Pembrokeshire in South Wales is the picturesque seaside resort and medieval town of Tenby. Bordered by the Pembrokeshire National Park, the town sits on a promontory surrounded by sweeping sandy beaches and bays, and was once a major trading port before it became fashionable as a holiday spot in the 19th century.

Known as a 'Little England beyond Wales', Tenby's medieval town walls encase ancient narrow cobbled streets which wind down to the pretty harbour,Tenby Photo where pastel Georgian houses face onto clusters of boats. On each side of the town are two large bays, while on the headland of Castle Hill, with views to Bardsey Island and the Pembrokeshire coast, are the remains of Tenby's Norman castle.

Part of the castle houses Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, where works by the painter Augustus John - who was born in the town - are on display. For details of local life in the 15th century head to the Tudor Merchant's House on Quay Hill. Also of interest is St Mary's Parish Church, which dates from the 12th century, although most of the building is 15th century. For bird and sealwatching, you can take a boat to Caldey Island where there are many interesting remnants of the island's long history as a monastic settlement.
