Tintern Abbey
Chepstow, Gwent, NP16 6TE, Wales, UK.
Tel. 44 (0)1291 689251

Tintern Abbey Photo The magnificent ruins of Tintern Abbey are located in a secluded setting amid the hills of the Wye river valley, near the town of Chepstow in South Wales.

The abbey was the first Cistercian house in Wales, and the second in Britain, founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. After the Dissolution in the 16th century the abbey became abandoned but restoration work began when the building was recognised as a romantic monument in the 18th century, Tintern Abbey Photo famously inspiring artists and poets such as J.M.W. Turner and William Wordsworth. Its attraction for visitors ensured the continual upkeep of the ruins.

Most of the ruins date from the rebuilding work carried out in the 14th century. The most handsome part of the abbey is the wonderful Gothic church (not much remains of the surrounding domestic buildings). Although lacking a roof, the delicate tracery of the huge windows, the sweeping arches, and the ornately decorated columns are an impressive sight, and it is easy to see why the splendour of the church has inspired so much awe throughout the ages. The surrounding wooded hills are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, enhancing the romantic appeal of the ruins themselves.
