The award-winning Tower Museum opened in 1992, and is located in the city of Derry, just inside the famous walls of the old town.

Housed in a reconstruction of the medieval O'Doherty tower (originally built for the MacDonnell clan), the museum tells the complicated history and development of the ancient city of Derry, from prehistoric times to the present day. The exhibitions are brought to life through tableaux, audio-visual displays, and the many historical artefacts on display. The museum provides a real insight into cultural and political conflicts that have shaped Derry, and the turbulent history of the city's sectarian divide is handled with skilful impartiality and sensitivity.

Events such as the terrible Siege of Derry in 1688-89, as well as the city's strategic role during WWII, are examined in great detail, as are the more recent Troubles of Northern Ireland. A new Armada exhibition focuses on artefacts recovered from the Trinidad Valencera, shipwrecked off the Donegal coast in the 16th century and discovered by divers in 1971.
