Tre'r Ceiri Hill Fort
Nr Nefyn, Lleyn Peninsula,
Gwynedd,
Wales, UK.

Tre'r Ceiri Photo Tre'r Ceiri is a spectacular Iron Age hillfort that lies close to the town of Nefyn on the Lleyn Peninsula in north Wales.

Crowning the heather-clad, rocky summit of one of the peaks of Yr Eifl, with outstanding views towards Snowdonia and across Caernarfon Bay, the site is exceptionally well preserved, containing the remains of around 150 hut circles that would have housed up to 500 people. The name means 'Town of the Giants', and it is believed that the huts were the summer habitations of shepherds. Tre'r Ceiri Photo Evidence suggests that the fort was occupied during the Roman period, although the origins of the site probably date from an earlier period around 200BC.

The enclosure is 950ft long by 340ft wide, and the huts are grouped in bands of four or five. They vary in size and shape, with the square or rectangular shaped huts thought to have been constructed later than the original circular and oval ones. The stone ramparts surrounding the circuit are as high as 3-4m in places. The climb up to the fascinating site is well worth the effort for the views alone (on clear days you can see as far as the Irish coast), and at the summit of the hill stands a Bronze Age cairn.
