Tretower Castle Photo Tretower Castle and Court lie ten miles southeast of Brecon, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Black Mountains and the nearby Vale of Usk.

The site, consisting of a late medieval fortified manor house and the striking remains of an earlier castle dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, has a fascinating history that spans many centuries, reflecting the changes and developments that have taken place over the years. Tretower Castle was built on the site of a previous Norman motte and bailey,Tretower Court Photo with the well-preserved Great Tower erected within the original shell keep in the 13th century. In the late 14th century a manor house was built nearby as a more luxurious residence, and was later developed and expanded. Most of today's building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Tretower Court was originally home to the Vaughan family, and the famous poet Henry Vaughan is said to have visited frequently and drawn inspiration from the beautiful surroundings. The building contains a central courtyard that was extensively modified in the 17th century, a battlemented wall-walk and gatehouse, a timbered Great Hall, and a recreated medieval garden. In summer, plays are performed in Tretower's atmospheric surroundings.
