Wales location map
Wales,
UK

Wales is a country of vast beauty, with some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK. Cardiff is the country's vibrant capital and lies on the south coast of Wales, along with the second largest city of Swansea.

Relics of the country's past can be found everywhere. Magnificent ancient castles such as those of Harlech, Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Conwy evoke the turbulent medieval history of Wales, while remains of earlier prehistoric settlers are most concentrated on the Isle of Anglesey in the north. The narrow-gauge railways and mining towns of Snowdonia, and the Valleys of the south, provide a fascinating insight into the more recent industrial heritage that has shaped many areas of the country.

The mountains of Wales are spectacular, ranging from the dramatic peaks and the rugged, untamed wilderness of Snowdonia, to the flat-topped summits of Brecon Beacons. Wales also contains some of the UK's most glorious coastal scenery, with the stunning Pembrokeshire, Camarthenshire and Glamorgan coasts stretching for miles in the south, and the remote, unspoilt beaches of the Lleyn Peninsula and the Isle of Anglesey in the north. There are lots of pleasant seaside towns - such as Aberystwyth in mid-Wales, Tenby in south Wales, and Llandudno in north Wales - that are great bases for exploring the surrounding areas; while inland are expanses of wild and remote countryside, deep river valleys, and isolated lakes and forests that make wonderful walking country.
