Welsh Mountain Zoo PhotoSet within a large wooded estate above Colwyn Bay on the north Wales coast is the Welsh Mountain Zoo.

The zoo opened in 1963 and aims to promote conservation of rare and endangered animals, with many captive breeding programmes. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, with wooded pathways and spectacular views over to the mountains of Snowdonia and the north Wales coast, the zoo has much to offer, and houses a wide range of different animal species.Welsh Mountain Zoo Photo Some of the animals are native to Wales, such as pine martens, red squirrels and otters, while there are also many exotic animals, including Sumatran tigers, Persian leopards, chimpanzees, Arctic foxes, camels, bears, alligators and flamingos.

The collection of birds of prey is impressive, with golden eagles - a species that has not flourished in Wales since the Middle Ages - residing at the zoo. There are many events that visitors can watch, including a penguin parade, sea lion show and falconry displays. The zoo is very informative, and a new media centre enables the visitor to take a virtual tour, as well as discover information about all the animals. The zoo also has a café and restaurant, a children's farm, and an adventure playground.
