The Wye Valley &
Vale of Usk, Wales

Vale of Usk Photo Situated in the county of Monmouthshire and forming the border with England, the Wye Valley runs between Chepstow and Monmouth, while the Vale of Usk further west extends north from Newport, Wales' third largest town.

The wooded Wye Valley is excellent walking country, with a number of waymarked trails, and the scenic gorge is also good for canoeing. The area has a large concentration of castles due to its historical importance as the gateway to Wales.Tintern Abbey Photo The historic walled town of Chepstow contains one of Britain's earliest stone fortresses, while to the west of the old market town of Monmouth is the splendid Raglan Castle. To the northeast are the 'Three Castles' of the borderlands: Skenfrith Castle, the more ruinous Grosmont Castle, and the secluded White Castle.

North of Chepstow, in a part of the valley designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are the majestic ruins of Tintern Abbey. Further west, the Vale of Usk is home to the remains of a Roman legionary fortress at Caerleon, just north of Newport. The Usk stretches north up to the Brecon Beacons in mid-Wales, passing the attractive town of Abergavenny which lies near the English border at the foot of the Black Mountains.
